Storing Latex Garments Correctly
Proper storage prevents yellowing, cracking, and surface damage. What you need to know.
Storage is often where latex garments are damaged without the wearer realising. The conditions in which a garment is kept between wears have a direct impact on its longevity.
The Core Principles
Darkness. UV light degrades latex progressively, even in small amounts. Store garments away from windows, in a wardrobe or drawer.
Cool temperature. Heat causes latex to deteriorate. Avoid storage near radiators, under skylights, or in unventilated rooms during warm months.
Away from metals. Latex reacts with copper, brass, and other metals over time, causing surface discolouration. Ensure garments do not rest against metal hangers, buckles, or fixings during storage.
How to Store
Apply a thin layer of latex dressing before storage. This prevents the garment from sticking to itself and keeps the surface protected.
Store garments flat where possible, or loosely rolled in a breathable bag. Avoid tight folding, which can create permanent creases over time.
Do not:
- Store in plastic bags sealed airtight — latex needs to breathe
- Stack garments under heavy items
- Leave garments in direct contact with dyed or printed fabrics for extended periods
Long-Term Storage
For garments stored for more than a few weeks, inspect them periodically and reapply dressing if needed. A brief rinse and re-polish before wearing will restore the surface after extended storage.
Stored correctly, a quality latex garment can last for many years.
